This April, The Home Depot is partnering with Back to the Roots for a special Earth Month Kids Workshop. Each child who participates will receive a planter kit, free Organic Heirloom Basil Seeds and, for the first time, Organic Peat-Free Seed Starting Mix to complete the planting experience.

Now in its third year, this partnership aligns with The Home Depot’s goal of encouraging hands-on learning. Back to the Roots is dedicated to helping families reconnect with food by making it easy and fun to grow fresh herbs and vegetables at home. This workshop teaches kids about sustainability through interactive engagement, combining building and growing.

Inspiring the Next Generation of DIYers

For nearly three decades, The Home Depot Kids Workshops have sparked creativity, taught hands-on skills and inspired the next generation of builders. Held on the first Saturday of every month, these workshops allow children to construct fun, engaging projects using fundamental tools, helping them build confidence and practical skills.

Each month, kids ages 5–12 (or younger with parental assistance) can participate in this free in-store event, where they receive a DIY project kit, a Home Depot apron, an achievement pin and a completion certificate. With hundreds of thousands of families attending workshops nationwide, The Home Depot continues to foster a culture of creativity, learning and now sustainability.

Sustainability in Action

Sustainability plays a key role in the Kids Workshops program. The factory that produces these kits is FSC-certified and meets SA8000 and ISO 9001 audit standards for ethical and responsible sourcing.

Additionally, these efforts are made to minimize waste during production:

  • Sawdust is repurposed as ground cover for pig farming.
  • Materials are optimized to ensure the highest level of utilization. Wherever possible, leftover pieces are repurposed for other uses rather than discarded. Extra materials are donated to local schools for arts and crafts.

Even after the workshops, all The Home Depot stores are instructed to recycle the corrugated boxes that the kits arrive in, and families are encouraged to recycle kit packaging responsibly, reinforcing the importance of sustainable habits.

Hands-On Learning with a Twist

Sustainability education goes beyond just the materials used in the kits. Each Kids Workshops project includes additional STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) extension activities developed in collaboration with Discovery Education, a leader in digital-first curriculum and personalized learning programs. Discovery Education creates engaging and effective educational content that helps students explore core subjects in exciting ways.

These activities allow kids to continue learning at home, exploring topics like recycling, conservation and biodiversity:

  • May 3, 2025 – Kids will build the Birdy Buffet Birdhouse, then observe and record bird activity in a daily nature journal.
  • July 5, 2025 – Kids will create a Toucan Mobile, then design a habitat drawing to understand where these birds live.
