LP Building Solutions and The Home Depot: 50 Years of Building a More Sustainable World

LP is helping homeowners build and remodel beautiful homes while also helping to build a better, more sustainable future.

For more than 50 years, LP Building Solutions has pioneered building products that are more sustainable, durable and energy efficient. As a maker of high-performance trim and siding, LP brings that depth of experience to every aspect of its products from how fiber is harvested to how finished products perform on the wall of a home, and for more than 35 years LP has partnered with The Home Depot to bring those products to customers across the country.

Sustainability and Resiliency at the Core

At LP, sustainability and resiliency are not separate initiatives. They are built into the company’s business model and culture. LP’s own history speaks to the role that sustainable building materials play in the long-term resilience of homes and communities, and that conviction has guided every product innovation the company has brought to market.

Responsible Forestry from the Ground Up

LP products are wood-based, a natural renewable resource and a durable alternative to non-renewable, energy-intensive materials like concrete. Because of that, sustainable forestry is at the heart of LP’s operations.

Responsible forest management is not just the right thing to do. It is critical for the long-term welfare of forests, communities and LP’s business. The company harvests fiber that is 100% sustainably sourced and actively encourages reforestation to keep the cycle of sustainable forest management going for generations to come.

That commitment carries through to manufacturing as well. LP’s systems are designed to limit environmental impact, and 99% of the fiber it harvests is used either in products or as an alternative thermal energy source to offset fossil fuel consumption. Very little goes to waste.

Carbon-Negative from the Start

One of LP’s flagship products, LP SmartSide Trim and Siding, takes sustainable building products a step further. LP SmartSide is carbon negative, meaning it stores more carbon than is released during its manufacturing and distribution.

The numbers behind that claim are significant. LP SmartSide stores 10 times the amount of carbon compared to fiber cement siding and emits 54% less greenhouse gas during production. Installing it on just one home offsets enough carbon to negate more than 3,500 miles driven by a car.

That level of environmental performance, built into a product homeowners are already choosing for its beauty and durability, is what makes LP a meaningful part of the climate solution.

Built to Last Through Anything

LP SmartSide is manufactured through LP’s exclusive SmartGuard process, which treats strands to help protect against moisture and freeze-thaw cycles, stand up to wind gusts up to 200 miles per hour and resist damage from termites and fungal decay. Products that last longer stay out of the waste stream longer, which is its own form of sustainability.

A Shared Commitment

LP’s approach to business demonstrates that making responsible choices and delivering high-performance products are not competing goals. From responsibly managed forests to carbon-negative siding, LP continues to raise the bar for what building products can contribute to a more sustainable world.

Working alongside The Home Depot, LP is helping homeowners build and remodel beautiful homes while also helping to build a better, more sustainable future for the communities they live in.
