Step 4: Shock.
Every week or two, or after heavy use and big storms, a dose of shock restores clarity by clearing out the contaminants regular chlorine can’t. Add shock in the evening so sunlight doesn’t burn it off and predissolve it in a bucket of water first if the label recommends it.
Step 5: Treat and maintain.

Finish with targeted treatments as needed. Algaecide prevents and clears algae growth, and a water clarifier pulls together the fine particles that leave water looking cloudy. These finishing products keep your pool clear between regular cleanings.
How to Store Pool Chemicals Safely
Where and how you store pool chemicals matters just as much as how you use them. Heat, moisture and incompatible products sitting too close together are the main hazards to avoid.
- Keep them cool and dry. Store chemicals in a shaded, well-ventilated spot away from direct sun and heat sources. A dedicated shelf in a garage or shed works well.
- Store separately. Keep chlorine products away from acids, and keep oxidizers like shock away from anything flammable. Never let different chemicals share an open container or shelf where spills could mix.
- Seal everything tightly. Always reseal lids after use and keep products in their original, clearly labeled containers so you never lose track of what’s inside.
- Keep them out of reach. Store all pool chemicals well away from children and pets, ideally up high or in a locked cabinet.
